Prostitution – Tragedy of India

♦        There are approximately 10 million prostitutes in India.  [City wise prostitute population:: Bombay 100,000    Calcutta 100,000    Delhi 40,000     Agra 40,000]
(Human Rights Watch, Robert I. Friedman, “India’s Shame: Sexual Slavery and Political Corruption Are Leading to An AIDS Catastrophe,” The Nation, 8 April 1996)

♦        India along with Thailand and the Philippines has 1.3 million children in its sex-trade centers. The children come from relatively poorer areas and are trafficked to relatively richer ones.
(Soma Wadhwa, “For sale childhood,” Outlook, 1998)

♦         In Bombay, children as young as 9 are bought for up to 60,000 rupees, or US$2,000, at auctions where Arabs bid against Indian men who believe sleeping with a virgin cures gonorrhea and syphilis.
(Robert I. Friedman, “India’s Shame: Sexual Slavery and Political Corruption Are Leading to An AIDS Catastrophe,” The Nation, 8 April 1996)

♦        There are more than 1,00,000 women in prostitution in Bombay, Asia’s largest sex industry center. 90% of the 1,00,000 women in prostitution in Bombay are indentured (bound by contract) slaves.

(Human Rights Watch, Robert I. Friedman, “India’s Shame: Sexual Slavery and Political Corruption Are Leading to An AIDS Catastrophe,” The Nation, 8 April 1996)

Should we call it a “System Failure” and get adjusted to it… Should we think “its not my job” and don t care about it… Should we think it is “not in our control circle” so don t be concern about it… They are there not by CHOICE but only by FORCE… They are forced by hunger, poverty and the lusty desires of the MEN… they are forced by many more COUNTER VALUES…       Please THINK and ACT…
